Manchester City face Chelsea looking to seal their third consecutive Premier League title
Manchester City to win 3-1
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Manchester, Etihad Stadium
Bet NowThe runaway train that is Manchester City under Pep Guardiola can clinch their fifth title in six seasons this weekend, a barely believable achievement for this terrific group of players.
It would be the first trophy of a potential three over the next few weeks, with FA Cup and Champions League finals to follow shortly.
In truth, they may not even need to kick a ball to win the title, because if Arsenal lose away to Nottingham Forest, it’ll all be over. Realistically, however, City will need to win here to confirm it.
Chelsea’s awful season rolls towards its close, with just two games left for Frank Lampard to see out as interim manager.
In years gone by, Chelsea would be challenging City for trophies, but they couldn’t be further away from that here. The Blues have avoided defeat in their last two games, but there isn’t much hope for them here.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Will win the title officially with victory
Could win their fourth consecutive game against Chelsea
Reasons to be fearful:
Build-up of fixtures could lead to player fatigue here
Their opponents have nothing to lose
Here we are again, with Manchester City about to win yet another Premier League trophy under Pep Guardiola. The title winning machine just keeps on going at the Etihad.
Fans will hope that this is just the start of an epic few weeks for the club, but all great things must start somewhere. City have won 11 consecutive games since mid-February and there is no sign of them slowing down.
On the contrary, they were phenomenal against Real Madrid in midweek, although it may leave their players a little fatigued here. One or two changes could be in order, although it won’t dampen the quality at Guardiola’s disposal.
After a sensational season, during which they overcame the challenge of Arsenal, City deserve the Premier League crown.
Star Man – Riyad Mahrez
Mahrez is likely to start having missed out in midweek. His fresh legs, and the fact he’s scored in his last three appearances against Chelsea, means that he’ll be a threat here.
Reasons to be cheerful
Have nothing to lose by going all out
Lampard avoided defeat at the Etihad with Everton earlier in the season
Reasons to be fearful
Won just one of their games against top half clubs this season
City’s Erling Haaland has scored as many goals as Chelsea’s entire squad - 36
Chelsea’s misery is nearly at an end this season, with Frank Lampard’s time at the club almost up and – if the rumours are true – Mauricio Pochettino is ready to swoop into the role.
He’ll have a big job on his hands to make them competitive again, but they’ve certainly got a talented squad.
Lampard has won one and drawn one of Chelsea’s last two games, showing slightly improvement perhaps on seven straight defeats in all competitions.
They have a poor record against City in recent seasons too, losing three on the bounce.
In their favour, Chelsea have literally nothing to lose by going out there and playing with a sense of freedom.
Star Man – Raheem Sterling
After a troubled season, Sterling came alive in their 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest recently. He also provided an assist in their previous game. Perhaps he can cause his former club some problems here?
City to win the league
Pep’s team will boss the Blues here
Two or more goals
Manchester City hunted Arsenal down in fine fashion, after trailing the Gunners for most of the season, but it now looks like they’ll win the league with a game to spare.
In winning 11 games on the bounce, City have shown the same kind of special form that has seen them lift countless trophies in recent seasons.
Chelsea are of little match for City right now and the best they can do is go out and give it their all.
