The T20 World Cup Americas Qualifier 2023 is all set to kick off in Buenos Aires with 5 teams fighting it out for a spot in the Regional final. The top 3 teams from this sub-regional tournament will progress to the next phase of the Americas Qualifier.
Bahamas and Belize have met once before in the 2021 T20 World Cup Americas Qualifier. Maurice Castillo and Kenton Young fought well to keep Belize alive in the run-chase.
However, Belize fell short by 11 runs as the Bahamas successfully defended 150 runs at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
Now the two teams are back to take on each other in another qualifier tournament and this time in Buenos Aires. Since November 2021, Belize haven’t played a single T20I match.
Whereas, Bahamas played their last T20I game in April of 2022 where they lost the series to the Cayman Islands 5-0. Marc Taylor will play a key role with the bat for the Bahamas while Gregory Taylor and Kervon Hinds are handy with the ball as well.
Kenton Young will continue to lead Belize as they take on the Bahamas in their opening game of the sub-regional Qualifier. While Belize haven’t played any T20 internationals since their last match of the 2021 Americas Qualifier, their record in that tournament wasn’t good either.
Kenton Young’s personal best came against the Bahamas in that tournament as he scored 44 of 39 balls opening for the side. Maurice Castillo was the top scorer for Belize in that game with a 59-run knock at number 3.
The lack of contributions from other batters in the lineup and the poor strike rates cost Belize the match as they failed to chase down 151 runs.
The only win for Belize in that tournament came against Panama while defending a 143-run total. The left-handed middle-order batsman Bernan Stephenson scored a brilliant 69 off 47 at number 4.
But as usual, others just didn’t rise to the occasion and it was the bowling effort that gave Belize their first win of the Qualifier. Stephenson followed it up with a 3 for 25 as he got through Panama’s late middle order.
He was also quite successful against the Bahamas and will again be a key all-rounder in this match. Garret Banner and Maurice Castillo will be other key bowlers to watch out for in this game.
Kenton Young (c & wk), Maurice Castillo, Bernan Stephenson, Garret Banner, Andrew Banner, Glenford Banner, Lebron Broaster, Glenroy Reynolds, Nathan Banner, Terrel Flowers, Tayshawn Moses
Bahamas made their T20 international debut in the America Qualifier 2021 playing against Canada at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. It was an unforgettable debut for the team as they were bowled out for 68 runs while chasing a 191-run target. The Bahamas won two of their 6 matches in that tournament.
Since then, the Bahamas have played 5 T20 internationals as they played the Cayman Islands in a 5-match T20I series in 2022. The team that showed great promise in 2021, lost all of these 5 matches.
Marc Taylor took over the reins from Gregory Taylor who led the team in their first-ever regional Qualifier in 2021. Taylor delivered some good knocks in their series against the Cayman Islands and is a key batsman in the Bahamas lineup.
It was Taylor’s 60 off 37 balls that helped the Bahamas secure their first-ever T20 international win in 2021 against Argentina. Both openers are also handy with the ball and Gregory in particular has been consistent. Jonathan Barry is another key player who will likely feature in the middle order and has a big role to play.
Just like the opposition, the Bahamas have also struggled to find batters who make significant contributions consistently. It has always come down to one or two batters who score the majority of runs for the team.
In addition to these three all-rounders, the Bahamas also have other impressive bowlers who can be expected to deliver consistently. Kevron Hinds, Festus Benn, and Sandeep Goud are other bowlers to watch out for.

There is not much known about the nature of this pitch given there has been only one match on this ground. Considering that game, it seems like the pitch isn’t a great one to bat on. The bowlers enjoyed great help from the surface in that game between Argentina and Bermuda. The weather is expected to be partly cloudy with a high of 31 degrees Celsius.
The St Albans Club is host to other sports events in addition to cricket. As such, we don’t reckon it would have the high standards as found in other cricket venues around the world. It will not be easy to score runs at this venue and will take patience on the batters’ part to get used to the conditions.
Both teams are playing T20 internationals after a long break, especially Belize. Neither of these teams has a strong and reliable middle order with quality finishers who can chase down a competitive total. It would be ideal to bat first and let the consistent and reliable bowlers continue their effort and help the team defend a total.
It promises to be a close encounter given how both teams have struggled to make a big impact in recent years. While Belize has been completely missing from action in 2022, the Bahamas have lost all of their matches in 2022. Both teams are dependent on their bowlers to give them an edge over the opposition. And only a couple of batsmen can be expected to make any significant impact. As such, the Bahamas with their bowling strength seem to have a slight edge and will start as favourites in our match prediction.
Our prediction is for Bahamas to win the match
