Chennai Super Kings will be eager to secure a home win to maintain their position in the top 4. Punjab Kings will be coming here on the back of heavy loss in Mohali where they conceded 257 runs bowling first.
It will be an exciting contest given how effective CSK have been on their home turf with both bat and ball. Punjab has a good bowling attack that features the likes of Arshdeep, Curran, Rabada, and Chahar.
However, only one of these bowlers has found success this season and is reliable at the death with his yorkers. The recent home fixture showed the vulnerability of Punjab’s bowling attack and Chennai will have watched the game closely.
We expect the young guns in CSK to continue their brilliant run of form. Gaikwad, Dube, and Conway at the top while Jadeja and Moeen Ali as finishers form a solid batting lineup.
Punjab will face a tough challenge away from home. Even though CSK bowlers were expensive in their last game against RR, they can bounce back under Dhoni’s leadership at Chepauk and give PBKS a tough time.
There’s not much a skipper can do when all of his trump cards fail. Three young and inexperienced pacers form the frontline of this CSK bowling attack.
Even the overseas bowler in this lineup is Maheesh Theekshana, a promising 22-year old mystery-spinner with 38 T20Is in his career. Jadeja isn’t in his best form but can be a key player with the ball on this ground.
In his last outing at Chepauk, Jaddu bagged 3 for 22 against SRH. Dhawan is back in the Punjab lineup along with Raza. They’ve also got Livingstone in the middle and recently Atharva Taide showed what he’s capable of.
There are many big-hitting players in the opposition. And MS needs a plan. It will not be an easy outing for the home team. What we can rely on is the batters in CSK.
They will have a good outing if the pitch continues to be a belter. Conway struggled in his last innings but overall has looked in great touch this season. The openers can get the team off to a flier followed by the aggression of a resurgent Rahane at number 3. This batting order is deep with MS Dhoni coming in at number 8.
Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Ajinkya Rahane, Moeen Ali, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Matheesha Pathirana, Tushar Deshpande, Maheesh Theekshana, Akash Singh

It was a night Mohali will never forget as Punjab Kings were at the receiving end of what could have been the highest ever IPL total. It will not be easy to come out of something like that for PBKS.
There are some positives to take from that game. Atharva Taide finding his touch and showing just what he’s capable of. Jitesh Sharma also continued his form and delivered another impactful performance in the lower order.
In his last 3 innings, Jitesh has scored 24 off 10, 25 off 7, and 41 off 27. His confidence is only rising and he will be a match-finisher to watch out for in this PBKS lineup.
Dhawan’s return should add more strength to Punjab’s batting. Though Raza and Livingstone in the middle can make a big difference, especially the latter, PBKS will also need Prabhsimran and Taide to deliver consistently.
It will be the consistency of the Indian players that will be the deciding factor in a team’s success in IPL. Livingstone, Sam Curran, and Jitesh Sharma pack a strong punch in the late order and Punjab can rely on them.
Arshdeep will be key with the ball. Rahul Chahar hasn’t been in his best form this season and needs to find his rhythm and consistency. Rabada is another major figure in the bowling attack.
Atharva Taide, Shikhar Dhawan (c), Sikandar Raza, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Shahrukh Khan, Kagiso Rabada, Rahul Chahar, Harpreet Brar, Arshdeep Singh

It is a batting-friendly pitch with some help for spinners. Two of the three matches this season were high-scoring while the last game saw spinners dominate the proceedings. The weather will be partly cloudy in Chennai on the match day with a high of 33 degrees Celsius.
MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, the home of CSK, will be the venue for this fixture. The straight boundaries are shorter at this venue and the size of the square boundaries would depend on the pitch chosen on the match day. While the average 1st innings score here is 158 runs, a winning-total should be something over 185-190 runs.
Historically, it has been a batting-first venue with teams winning more matches after opting to bat. 2 of the 3 matches this season were won by teams batting first at this venue. Since it is a day game, batting first can have its advantages and there can be help for the bowlers as well.
Both teams had a bad day on field in their last outing where the bowlers were taken to the cleaners by the opposition. Punjab might bring in Harpreet Brar to add more variety in the spin. If the pitch helps the spinners as it did in the last game here, it may not be a very high-scoring match. Batting first, then, would be an advantage. The experience of Rahane and Dhawan will be valuable to their respective teams. We reckon CSK has a home advantage and will be slightly ahead in this contest.
