Mumbai Indians Women beat Delhi Capitals Women by 7 wickets

Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals have clashed twice in the season, with both teams registering one win each.

  • Issy Wong, who took the tournament's first-ever hat-trick in the previous game, is the bowler to watch out for.
  • Meg Lanning is Delhi’s most successful batter this year. Back her to do something special in the final.
  • Nat Sciver-Brunt is the batter in form for Mumbai and will be the crucial wicket for the opposition in the final.

We are backing the Mumbai Indians as the winners of this final.

Mumbai Indians Women stormed into the final of the WPL 2023 after defeating UP Warriorz by 72 runs. They will now face the Delhi Capitals Women at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on the 26th of March for the first-ever WPL title. It promises to be a blockbuster contest as both teams are in form, and there’s no outright favorite for this encounter.

Delhi Capitals Women Preview

The Delhi Capitals Women have had a season to remember, regardless of how the final goes for them. They were the first team to reach the final of the WPL and have grown better with each game.

Captain Meg Lanning has been their best batter throughout the season. She is the leading run-getter of the season with 310 runs in 8 matches at a strike rate of 141. We are expecting another solid performance from the opener in the all-important final.

Shafali Verma (241 runs at a strike rate of nearly 183), has given the team blazing starts and a blistering cameo in the final will help put Delhi ahead.

Another player we think will do well in the final is Marizanne Kapp. She’s been solid in the middle order and collected 159 runs in 6 innings this season at a strike rate of 127.20. Kapp has delivered with the ball as well, taking 9 wickets at an economy of just 5.75.

The Capitals’ best bowler this season, though, has been fast bowler Shikha Pandey with 10 wickets at an economy of 6.71. Her spell with the new ball can be crucial to the outcome of the game. Left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen (8 wickets at an economy of 7.77) will be a handful on this surface.

Delhi Capitals Women Predicted Playing XI:

Mumbai Indians Women Preview

For the majority of the WPL, Mumbai were expected to advance directly to the final. They had won five straight matches and appeared to be unbeatable... until they lost two in a row. However, they have come roaring back by registering two wins on the trot, including a thumping win against the UP Warriorz in the Eliminator.

Nat Sciver-Brunt proved her class once again with a spectacular knock of 72* off 38 balls. She is now the team’s highest run-getter this season, with 272 runs at a strike rate of 149.45.

Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur may not have scored many runs in the last few games, but she’s a big match player and we are expecting something special from her in the final.

All-rounder Hayley Matthews has had a terrific season for Mumbai, both with the bat and the ball. As an opener, she has scored 258 runs in 9 matches, at a strike rate of 127. She has also taken 13 wickets with her off-breaks at an economy of 6.56. Suffice to say, she will have a huge role to play in the final.

Issy Wong has been in sensational form with the ball. The right-arm quick registered the tournament's first-ever hat-trick in the Eliminator against UP, taking her tally of wickets in the season to 12 at a wonderful economy of 5.89. She will pose a serious challenge to the Delhi batters during the middle overs with her movement off the pitch.

Mumbai Indians Women Predicted Playing XI:

Hayley Matthews, Yastika Bhatia (wk), Nat Sciver-Brunt, Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Melie Kerr, Pooja Vastrakar, Issy Wong, Amanjot Kaur, Humaira Kazi, Jintimani Kalita, Saika Ishaque

Weather Conditions

The pitch at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai offers something both to the bolers and batters. It is known to be batting friendly, but has provided assistance both to seamers and spinners. Fast bowlers will get movement off the pitch when the ball is new. But as the dew starts to set in at night, the ball will come on nicely to the bat and runs will flow easily.

The weather in Mumbai for the match is expected to be clear, warm, and humid.

Venue Details

The average 1st innings score at the Brabourne Stadium in the WPL is 169. The highest total posted here this season is 223-2 Delhi Capitals Women. The team batting first in the final should look to set a target of at least 180 runs as batting will become easier in the second half.

Toss: To Bowl

Batting second has paid better dividends at the Brabourne Stadium this season. Out of the 10 games played at the venue in the WPL, 6 have been won by the team chasing. The team winning the toss in the final is expected to field first.

Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals both have an equally matched batting unit. The likes of Meg Lanning, Shafali Verma, Nat Sciver-Brunt, and Harmanpreet Kaur are likely to make some sort of impact with the bat. However, what might set the two teams apart in the final will be their bowling. While Delhi has a solid bowling unit, Mumbai’s bowling has much more variety and is looking in amazing shape. We feel Wong, Matthews, and Saika Ishaque might prove to be the biggest hurdles for the Capitals in the final.

We are backing the Mumbai Indians as the winners of this final.
