India Women couldn’t have asked for a better start to their 2023 T20 World Cup journey. They recorded the second-highest chase in women’s T20 Word Cup history by polishing off a challenging target of 150 with exactly one over to spare. The unbroken 58-run stand between Jemimah Rodrigues (53* off 38 balls) and Richa Ghosh (31* off 20 balls) proved to be the clincher. 

Jemimah had gone through a lean phase before this knock, and her performance will greatly please the management. Meanwhile, the big-hitting Richa continues to impress, and her cameos down the order will be crucial for the team in the tournament. Opener Smriti Mandhana is expected to be back for this game after missing out on the first one due to injury. That would further bolster the Indian batting. 

India’s bowling was a little wayward in the last half of the first innings in the match against Pakistan, where they couldn’t stem the flow of runs. Deepti Sharma conceded 39 runs in her 4 overs while picking up one wicket. However, the experienced off-spinner will remain India’s most important bowler in this tournament. Left-arm spinner Radha Yadav had an excellent game, taking 2-21 from 4 overs.

West Indies Women are having a horrible run in T20Is at the moment, having lost their last 5 games in a row. They lost their first game of the 2023 T20 World Cup to England Women by 7 wickets after posting a moderate 135-7 on the board. 

West Indies Women’s biggest issue is their batting. Barring skipper Hayley Matthews (241 runs in the last 10 matches at an average of 26.77 and a strike rate of 105.7) and middle-order batter Shemaine Campbelle (135 runs in her last 10 games at an average of 15 and a strike rate of 80.35), none of the others have really clicked. Even in the match against England, Matthews top-scored with an attractive 42 off 32 balls while Campbelle made 34 off 37 runs. The Windies women desperately need some runs from the like of Shabika Gajnabi, Chinelle Henry, and Chedean Nation.

Their bowling hasn’t been too impressive either. Chinelle Henry and Shamilia Connell are leaking runs at the start, and it’s again been up to Hayley Matthew to stem the flow with her off-breaks. Leg-spinner Afy Fletcher has done decently in recent times but has her task cut out against India's batters who are solid players of spin.
