Lucknow Super Giants will take on Mumbai Indians in an all-important game at home. A win here would strengthen the chances of playoff qualification for both teams.
In their last game, LSG staged a brilliant comeback in a run-chase against SRH with Prerak Mankad, Stoinis, and Pooran all playing their roles to perfection.
However, the home conditions aren’t suitable for the kind of batting power LSG possess. It will also be challenging for Mumbai Indians who’ve played their last few matches in Mumbai and one in Chepauk.
MI’s middle-order has some in-form big-hitters like Suryakumar Yadav, Cameron Green while Tilak Verma and Tim David are reliable finishers. Nevertheless, the Lucknow pitch will throw a tough challenge with its lack of pace to the in-form MI batters.
While LSG have been quite successful with the ball on this ground, they have failed to chase a modest total. This can be another low-scoring encounter and the team batting first will have an advantage.
LSG need to win both of their remaining matches to cement their position in top 4. A loss in this game would mean they can finish with a maximum of 15 points which may not be enough to qualify.
LSG started their home season with back to back wins but have lost 3 games since then. Their struggles on this venue have only increased. In their last match on this ground, LSG were 125-7 in the 20th over before rain washed out the game.
The recent win over SRH while chasing a 183-run target will surely boost their confidence. In spite of a terribly slow start to their run-chase, the Super Giants managed to bounce back courtesy of Stoinis and Pooran.
LSG had a different number 3 batsman for their last 3 outings. It was Prerak Mankad who delivered a significant knock at the position after Hooda and Karan Sharma failed in previous games. Mayers, Stoinis, and Pooran are big-hitters at the right positions in this batting order.
However, what LSG would need on this ground is a batsman in an anchor’s role who can play a longer innings. Prerak Mankad at 3 and Quinton de Kock as an opener are the best candidates for this job. QDK can adapt to the situations well and can pace his innings accordingly.
The spinners in the bowling department will have a key role to play. Amit Mishra, Ravi Bishnoi, and the skipper Krunal Pandya himself form a solid spin-bowling unit.
Quinton de Kock (wk), Kyle Mayers, Krunal Pandya (c), Prerak Mankad, Marcus Stoinis, Nicholas Pooran, Amit Mishra, Yash Thakur, Ravi Bishnoi, Yudhvir Singh Charak, Avesh Khan

Mumbai Indians have bounced back really well. After 3 wins from 7 matches, they weren’t looking good in the points table and were far from making it to the top 4.
MI won 4 of their 5 matches and now find themselves at number 3 in the points table with 14 points from 12 matches. After seeing Surya’s comeback in recent matches, Mumbai India will face their biggest challenge in Lucknow.
It is not a pitch where they can chase down 200+ totals. Though they defended the 218-run total in their last home game against GT, in Lucknow, the game would be a lot different.
If the pitch continues to be the same way, Rohit Sharma should be eyeing a 165-170 total batting first. And though the bowling attack is a bit inexperienced, he can rely on his bowlers to continue the momentum from the last match. Piyush Chawla will be the key bowler for MI in the middle overs.
He will be tasked with removing the big guns like Stoinis and Pooran. Though a bit expensive, Madhwal has shown great promise, especially at the death, and will be another one to watch out for. The bowlers would enjoy their time here but the batters will need to make some adjustments.
It will be interesting to see if Nehal Wadhera can continue his good form in the middle order.
Ishan Kishan (wk), Rohit Sharma (c), Cameron Green, Suryakumar Yadav, Nehal Wadhera, Tim David, Chris Jordan, Vishnu Vinod, Piyush Chawla, Jason Behrendorff, Kumar Kartikeya
Nehal Wadhera, Piyush Chawla, Akash Madhwal, Jason Behrendorff, Cameron Green, Timothy David, Hrithik Shokeen, Chris Jordan, Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav
The pitch has been disappointing as per the standard set by other IPL venues. The ball doesn’t come on to the bat quickly and it gets difficult to time the ball to six. There can be some turn on offer for the spinners. The weather will be clear with a high of 42 degrees celsius.
Ekana Stadium in Lucknow will host the last home game for LSG this season. The first game at the venue saw LSG post 190+ total but it has been downhill since then. We reckon a 165-170 1st innings score can be quite competitive on this ground where the boundaries aren’t short and the pitch is flat.
If the pitch gets slower as the game progresses, both captains would be keen on batting first and getting runs on the board. It is not an easy pitch to chase and unless a team is all out for below 140 runs, chasing will not promise a win here.
The current form of both teams is in stark contrast. While LSG have lost 3 of their last 5 games, MI have won 4. While the conditions may be challenging for batters in both teams, there is depth in the MI lineup with in-form and reliable players. If LSG lose Stoinis and Pooran cheaply, they are in big trouble. An exciting match on the cards with plenty on stake, we reckon MI will start with an edge over the hosts.
