LSG will be taking on RCB on their home venue as they look to avoid a hat-trick of losses on this ground. The hosts failed to chase down 136 runs in their last match here where they dominated all but 4 overs of the match.
Nevertheless, the KL-led team registered the highest score of this IPL in Mohali in their last match. And will be carrying that momentum and confidence in their batting as they gear up for the RCB challenge.
After back to back losses under the stand-in skipper Kohli, RCB’s vulnerabilities were exposed in their home game against KKR. A 200-run total isn’t out of reach at the Chinnaswamy with the kind of batting power RCB has.
But once they lost Faf and Maxwell, they needed a one-man show from Kohli to take them across the line. LSG, in contrast, have many batters who can step up and deliver on any given day.
Badoni has shown great promise while Stoinis and Pooran are placed perfectly in the late middle order. It will be an exciting contest between two sides on a tricky surface in Lucknow.
A brilliant start from Kyle Mayers set the platform for at least 220+ total and the LSG middle order didn’t disappoint as Badoni, Stoinis, and Pooran all delivered big time in their last match.
It was a much-needed performance for LSG to gain some confidence after a dramatic loss in their previous match against GT. While Rahul’s struggle with strike rate and the 1st Over continues, the middle order has some good news for the Super Giants.
There is great variety in the bowling attack as well and that will be crucial as LSG return home for another match. Naveen-ul-Haq is the pick of the bowlers and will be key on this ground against RCB.
Early wickets is what KL Rahul should be aiming for. A few quick wickets and LSG would be right on top of the game. Though one can never count Kohli out of the game given the sheer talent and potential the former India skipper possesses.
Yet, a slowish pitch, a weaker middle-order, and early losses will have RCB in deep trouble. Bishnoi and Krunal Pandya will also play an important role with the spin though the opposition has a couple of batters who love hitting spinners out of the park.
KL Rahul (c), Kyle Mayers, Deepak Hooda, Marcus Stoinis, Krunal Pandya, Nicholas Pooran (wk), Ayush Badoni, Naveen-ul-Haq, Ravi Bishnoi, Avesh Khan, Yash Thakur
Naveen ul Haq, Marcus Stoinis, Yash Thakur, Krunal Pandya, Lokesh Rahul, Nicholas Pooran, Krishnappa Gowtham, Amit Mishra, Ravi Bishnoi, Kyle Mayers, Deepak Hooda
This is a challenging time for RCB. An over-dependence on their star players and a possibly tricky and slowish pitch in Lucknow aren’t ideal at this point.
RCB need their middle order to find its form. Could this challenge be an opportunity in disguise? Time will tell. It seems Dinesh Karthik’s time in the IPL has reached its end. With his current form, he’s becoming a liability for RCB and will likely go unsold next season.
Shahbaz Ahmed failed to make any difference with either bat or bowl in the last game at home. Mohamamd Siraj is in sublime form and is picking up wickets consistently in the powerplay.
He would put RCB on top if he does the same against LSG. Harshal Patel would have a good time at this venue with his slower balls. Another key bowler to watch out for in the RCB lineup is Wanindu Hasaranga.
There are some quality bowling options and RCB can pose a tough challenge to the hosts. What they need is for Faf and Maxwell to get going once again and set a big score in the first 12-15 Overs.
Kohli needs to play a longer knock as he used to in the past and ensure he takes his team across the line. While there is Mahipal Lomror who’s looked promising and can score some quick runs, a lot depends on the Big 3 in this lineup.
Virat Kohli (c), Shahbaz Ahmed, Glenn Maxwell, Mahipal Lomror, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Suyash Prabhudessai, Wanindu Hasaranga, David Willey, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Harshal Patel, Mohammed Siraj
Mohammed Siraj, Anuj Rawat, Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis, Suyash Prabhudessai, Karn Sharma, Mahipal Lomror, Glenn Maxwell, Wanidu Hasaranga, Dinesh Karthik, Josh Hazlewood
It is a black-soil pitch which means the pacers would enjoy bowling here and there would also be some help for the spinners. It has been very tricky to bat here so far and we could be looking at another low-scoring thriller. Isolated thunderstorms are expected on the match day with a high of 23 degrees Celsius.
The Ekana Stadium in Lucknow is the venue for this match. The average 1st innings score in IPL at this venue is 152 while LSG holds the record for the highest score of 192 on this ground. A match-winning total should be something over 170 for team batting first.
It is not an easy call on this ground. So far, teams batting second have won 2 of the 4 IPL matches here. It is a night game and if dew comes into play, the chasing team would find it easier to bat. Both teams would be hoping to pick early wickets and restrict the opposition to a par score and chase it down.
There is no lack of overseas talent in both teams. Some phenomenal hitting power at the top in RCB while LSG has great firepower in the lower order as well. This may not be the right pitch for a show of strength from both sides but it will definitely test their batters. LSG with their depth in the batting lineup and the form of the lower-order batters, will have an edge over the visitors.
