Two bottom ranked teams will be locking horns at The Lord’s hoping for a start of a comeback at a crucial juncture in the league. One of the biggest issues facing both teams is their poor batting form.

Middlesex came very close to their target in their last outing but a failure to chase down a 165-run target doesn’t reflect well on their batting. On previous outings, the Eskinazi-led team finished with 139-9 and 136-10 batting first.

The Sharks have also been toothless when it comes to batting. Though they scored 180+ in the last game while chasing a 220-run target, previously Sussex were bowled out for 144 and 138.

Max Holden, Jack Davies, and Ryan Higgins are among the key players to have scored anything significant for Middlesex in the middle order. A lot depends on the middle order for Middlesex. It is worse in the Sussex camp given how their batters have been inconsistent in the middle.

Middlesex Preview

This has been one of the worst seasons for Middlesex so far. Steve Eskinazi looks helpless while the team keeps on losing one game after another. Holden’s fifty and his partnership with Higgins gave Middlesex a good chance at securing their first win of the season in the last outing.

However, they fell short by 5 runs and their winless drought continues. The good news for Middlesex would be the promise shown by these middle order batters. Max Holden, Ryan Higgins, and Jack Davies have scored crucial runs in the last 3 innings.

While they may not have been able to convert those scores into a big impact knock, there is some consistency and as a result, Eskinazi can rely on them. However, the skipper himself has been completely out of touch with scores of 0, 1, and 18 (24) in his last 3 innings.

At the same time, his opening partner, Joe Cracknell has scored 0, 2, and 2 in his last 3 innings. This is a big headache for Middlesex as it only increases the pressure on the middle-order batsmen.

Eskniazi would be backing his bowlers in this game as the opposition also struggles with batting issues. The bad news is that Tom Helm and Blake Cullen haven’t been among the wickets either. The two frontline bowlers aren’t finding consistent success and this has affected the team’s winning chances so far.

Josh de Caires and Luke Hollman are the key bowlers for Middlesex. They’ve been economical even if they haven’t found as many breakthroughs as they would have liked.

Middlesex Predicted Playing XI:

Stephen Eskinazi (c), Joe Cracknell, Pieter Malan, Max Holden, Ryan Higgins, Jack Davies (wk), Luke Hollman, Josh De Caires, Martin Andersson, Tom Helm, Blake Cullen

Sussex Preview

Tom Aslop scored 58 off 42 in the last game and it was the only 50+ score for Sussex Sharks in their last 4 matches. It has been that bad for the Sharks since they registered their first win at The Oval against Surrey.

Since that first win of the season, Sussex Sharks have lost 4 consecutive matches and their batting has been a disaster. Shadab Khan has failed to make an impact as an all-rounder.

In their game against Essex, Shadab picked 3 for 28 as Sharks restricted the opposition to 163-7. He was sent to bat at number 4 and was out for a golden duck. In the next two games he was expensive and wicketless while scoring 1 (11) and 3 (5) at number 5.

It looks like Ravi Bopara’s time in T20 cricket is done. He’s no longer able to deliver those big impact knocks and finishes he once did. Neither does he make any impact with the ball.

While there is no dearth of bowling talent in this side with the likes of George Garton, Tymal Mills, and Nathan McAndrew, and they’ve also delivered a few good bowling performances in recent games, there are no consistent and reliable batters in the side.

And that is the biggest concern for Sussex Sharks going into this match. Tom Aslop and Michael Burgess showed a ray of hope in the last game but there is still plenty of room for improvement in the Sharks’ batting.

Sussex Predicted Playing XI:

Tom Clark, Tom Haines, Tom Alsop, Ravi Bopara (c), Shadab Khan, Michael Burgess (wk), James Coles, Fynn Hudson-Prentice, Nathan McAndrew, Tymal Mills, Henry Crocombe

Weather Conditions

The pitch is a well balanced one that offers something for everyone. It has a little grass that will help the seamers while the dry bit also aids spin bowling. Batters can score freely on this pitch once they are set. The weather will be partly cloudy with a high of 22 degrees Celsius and this will bring the seam bowlers in play.

Venue Details

Lord’s, London, the home of cricket, and the home ground for Middlesex will host its second match of the T20 Blast this season. Middlesex will be hoping for a turnaround here with a consistent middle-order that needs a little support from the top-order. The average 1st innings score at this venue is 170 runs and we reckon going by the current form of these teams, even a 180 score would be highly competitive.

Toss: To Bat

Teams batting first have won 20 of the 37 T20s played at this venue. This season, Surrey defeated Middlesex by 73 runs in the only game played here so far. Neither of the two teams have an in-form batting lineup that can chase a total and hence, would prefer batting first and defending a total.

Middlesex are sitting at the bottom in the points table with no wins so far. Though Sussex Sharks are one place ahead of them with just one win from 7 matches, the home team has a slight edge in terms of reliability in the batting lineup. There is a little consistency to the batting performances from Middlesex batters. Sharks have a stronger and varied bowling attack while Middlesex bowlers have struggled for wickets. Overall it is a close contest between the two sides but we reckon Middlesex will start with a slight edge in our match prediction.
