Yorkshire have slipped to fifth place in the North Group of the 2023 Vitality Blast after suffering two back-to-back defeats. They have 12 points in 11 games at a net run rate of -0.787. With just three games left in the league stage, Yorkshire will need to lift themselves up quickly and get back on track. However, that task won’t be easy as their match is against table-toppers, the Birmingham Bears. The Bears have lost just three matches this season and have already defeated Yorkshire earlier in the season.
Yorkshire’s campaign was going smoothly before they were rocked by two heavy defeats on the trot – by 144 runs against Derbyshire and by 78 runs against Northamptonshire. In both of these matches, Yorkshire have been led down by their batting. Against Derbyshire, they were shot out for just 68 while chasing 213; against Northamptonshire, they were shot out for just 102 while chasing a target of 181.
Despite these batting failures, Yorkshire should have the confidence to bounce back, as they have the season’s leading run-getter in Dawid Malan in their team. Malan has amassed 525 runs in 11 innings this season at an average of 58.33 and a strike rate of 155.32. Another batter who can make an impact in this game is opener Adam Lyth, who has 202 runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 130.32.
In the bowling department, Yorkshire have a few more players to depend on. Jordan Thompson leads the pack with 19 wickets in 11 innings at an economy of 9.51. Then there’s Ben Mike (13 wickets in 11 innings at an economy of 11.58) and David Wiese (10 wickets in 10 innings at an economy of 8.53), who have taken regular wickets. However, the Yorkshire bowlers have been pretty expensive of late, and this might hurt them against a team like Birmingham.

Birmingham Bears have won their last three games and are flying high. They are coming off a tight win against Durham in Riverside Ground, where they chased a target of 147 with two wickets and just three balls remaining.
Birmingham has succeeded this season because they aren’t dependent on one or two players to do the job. Despite missing their top run-getter, Sam Hain, due to injury, the Bears have the likes of Alex Davies (271 runs this season in 10 innings at a strike rate of 142.63) and Rob Yates (204 runs in 7 innings at a strike rate of 132.46) to contribute.
Glenn Maxwell has had a quiet season, scoring just 122 runs in 9 innings. However, the star Aussie batter is just one good knock away from regaining his touch, and this might well be his game. Also, while he may not have contributed much with the bat, Maxwell has been more than handy with his offbreaks, pouching 7 wickets at an economy of just 6.76.
Slow left-arm spinner Danny Briggs has been Birmingham’s best bowler this year, taking 12 wickets in 10 innings at an economy of 6.87. The arrival of Pakistani quick Hasan Ali has injected more venom into the bowling unit. Hasan has impressed in the four games he’s played and has taken 4 wickets at an economy of 7.45.

The pitch at Headingley is a belter of a track. The surface here offers both pace and bounce during the early stages of the game, which should keep the seamers interested. However, the ball also comes on nicely to the bat and batters will be able to score freely after they settle down for a bit. Spinners do get some help here, but during the middle overs.
The weather in Leeds during the game will have intervals of clouds and sunshine, but it will largely be warm.
The average score batting first at Headingley in the T20 Blast is 164. The highest total posted here is 260-4 by Yorkshire versus Northamptonshire in 2017. The highest total posted here this season is 224-4 by Yorkshire against Worcestershire. There have been two totals over 200 along with two totals of 190 achieved at Headingley in this year’s Blast. The team batting first in this match must look to set a target of around 190-200 runs.
There have been six matches played at Headingley this season in the Blast; four have been won by the team batting first and two by the chasing side. We think the team winning the toss is likely to bat first in this game.
In the last ten T20 Blast showdowns, Yorkshire has emerged victorious six times, while Birmingham has tasted victory on four occasions. However, Yorkshire were beaten comfortably by Birmingham the last time these two sides clashed this season. The Bears have grown from strength to strength since then. Meanwhile, Yorkshire seem to be struggling badly with their batting form, while their bowlers are leaking runs. Birmingham has a much better overall squad and have depth in both departments. Their spinners have been extremely economical and might make a difference in this game.
Back the Birmingham Bears as the winners of this contest.
