At the business end of PKL, many teams are out of contention for the playoff but they still hope to make it miraculously. Patna Pirates and the Gujarat Fortune Giants will be hoping against hope to make their dream come true. In doing so, they either perform out of the box or fall down like dominos.

The Patna Pirates lost a close match to the UP Yodha. They have lost 3 out of their last 5 matches as they look worn out. All-rounder Rohit Gulia scored another Super 10 while defender Mohammedreza was lethal with 6 tackle points. But the Pirates can’t win the game on individual brilliance now.

The Fortune Giants decided to party as they blasted the Puneri Paltan in their last match. Raider Prateek Dahiya resembled a DJ belting super hit tracks as he earned 19 raid points. The Gujarat defense made sure that they blocked all the Puneri raiders which helped the Fortune Giants to win a much-needed game. The bigger question is can the Fortune Giants continue to party against the Patna Pirates?

Patna Pirates Preview

Former champions could not set the mat on fire this season. They were extremely dodgy early in the tournament which kept them in recovery mode rather than the winning one. They look fatigued and overly dependent on a couple of players. 

The Patna Pirates are placed 9th in the points table after playing 18 games. The Pirates have won just 1 out of their last 5 matches which is a major concern. That win was against the Telegu Titans which was a very close game. The Pirates could have lost the match, but it was a tactical blunder from the Titans which helped the Pirates to escape with a 1-point victory.

The return of left corner Mohammedreza added a lot of spice to the Pirate's defense. Raider Sachin Tanwar has been phenomenal since the last few games as he has registered 7 Super 10’s in 17 games. The major concern of the Pirates is the lack of a second and third raider. They are heavily dependent on Sachin which gets them in trouble once in a while. Raiders Monu and Anuj Kumar have played well but they are still in warming-up mode.  

Fortunately, Captain Neeraj Kumar has got back to his lethal hunting while defender Sunil has been consistent. Both defenders along with Mohammedreza have scripted the Pirate's comeback. All-rounder Rohit Gulia led the raiding in the first few games and he was spot on. 

The Patna Pirates have improved their approach in the last few games but there is still scope for improvements. 

The Pirates have executed 268 successful team raids out of their total 770 team raids.

They have been able to conduct just 153 successful team tackles in 18 games.

The former champions have inflicted 23 all-outs in 18 games while conceding 25. This is one of their biggest concerns as their opponents have been able to bundle them out regularly. They did manage to beat the Gujarat Fortune Giants earlier in the season but this repeat encounter with the Giants can be dangerous. The Fortune Giants are fresh from the thrashing they gave to table toppers Puneri Paltan. It will be an uphill task for the fragile Patan defense to counter the Gujarat raiders.

Gujarat Giants Preview

The Gujarat Fortune Giants are an unpredictable lot. They work on the extremes of the spectrum. Even though they have displayed moments of brilliance, this season has been full of tactical blunders for them. That is the reason for their stability in the lower half of the points table throughout the season. They are currently placed 11th in the points table with a very feeble chance of making it to the playoff. But they seem to be thrilled by spoiling the party for other teams.

They dished out a hot and spicy performance against the Puneri Paltan in their last match. They scored 51 points and won the game in style. Raider Prateek Dahiya was the demolition man for the Giants as he looted 19 points in the match. The Fortune Giants tactically blocked all the Puneri raiders and did not allow them to score. They kept Aslam Inamdar off the mat for over 35 minutes which took the fizz out of the Paltan. Defender Arkam Shaikh scored a Hi 5 too. But can they continue this kind of spunky performance in their remaining games?

Captain Chandran Ranjit is scoring consistently while Raiders Rakesh and Mahendra Rajput have been useful during the second half of the matches. The Fortune Giants are troubled due to their weak defense. All-rounder Shankar Gadai and Sandeep Kandola have been scratchy while defender Arkam Shaikh has not been able to maintain consistency. Defender Vijin Thangadurai too has leaked points.

This makes the Gujarat Fortune Giants a one-dimensional team, heavily dependent on its raiders. 

The Fortune Giants have been able to execute just 134 successful team tackles in 18 games which is the lowest among all the teams.

They have conceded 698 team points as well as 26 all-outs.

The Fortune Giants need to reboot urgently else their operating system will hang over the next few weeks resulting in a system crash.
