Chennai Super Kings Review
CSK lost this game on multiple levels. First, they misread the pitch and then they could not chase down 155 in the absence of MS Dhoni. The pitch has been playing tricks all through this season. But, this time, CSK were the ones on the losing side.
Winning the toss, Raina decided to bowl first. Fatally, as it turned out in the end. The pitch played well for first 10 overs. Chennai removed De Kock in the powerplay and had the visitors for 45 for 1 in the powerplay. However, in the middle overs, they failed to restrict the run flow as Mumbai reached close to 100 in 12 overs. But then Santner found his rhythm and got rid of Lewis. He came back later to remove Rohit Sharma as well. When it looked like CSK will stop Mumbai under 150, Bravo leaked 17 runs in the last over. Still, CSK conceded just 56 in the last 8 overs.
CSK had never failed in a chase at Chennai since 2013. However, their fate was probably decided in the powerplay as they were 40 for 3 by the end of six overs. Vijay was the lone man standing at the top of the order with Kedar Jadhav to his company. Soon, CSK slumped to 66 for 6 by the 12th over. Bravo and Santner resisted but CSK folded for 109 nonetheless.
Mitchel Santner was the peak of the bowlers and the most economical of the match as well. He conceded just 13 runs in 4 overs picking 2 top order wickets. Harbhajan was very good in helping conditions and conceded just 9 runs in the powerplay. Imran Tahir and Deepak Chahar took one wicket each but they went for 83 among themselves. Murali Vijay top scored with 38 but he had little support at the other end. Apart from him, Bravo and Santner scored in the 20s while the rest could score only in single digits.
Mumbai Indians Review
Mumbai Indians pulled off a rare victory chasing at the Chepauk. They had a bit of luck on their side as they got to bat when the surface was at its best to bat on. And then the Mumbai bowlers strangled CSK batsmen as the surface got worse and worse as the match progressed eventually winning the match comprehensively by 46 runs.
Losing a crucial toss and batting first, Mumbai were cautious to not lose too many wickets early on. They scored at slightly more than 7 an over in the powerplay. Rohit Sharma then picked up the pace to get Mumbai closer to 100. However, Santner spell pulled things back. Once, Rohit got out it seemed 150 was too far, but Hardik Pandya took 17 of the final over to get Mumbai to 155. It was not a big score by any means but it was par looking at the surface and tricks it played for CSK bowlers.
Defending 155, Mumbai started reaping the benefits of the surface very early in their spell. By the end of 5th over, they had 3 CSK top order batsmen back in the hut. With no Dhoni in the team, Mumbai had little trouble getting the middle and lower middle order out cheaply. Eventually, 155 turned out to be way out of reach for Chennai.
Man if the match Rohit Sharma top-scored for Mumbai with 67 off 48 deliveries. Next best was Lewis with 32 off 30. Malinga was the peak of the bowlers taking 4 wickets for 37 including 2 in the last over. Krunal and Bumrah took 2 wickets each. A wicket each by Hardik and Roy completed the rout for Mumbai Indians.
Upcoming Matches
Though CSK have already qualified for the playoffs, their dependence on MS Dhoni, as a captain and as a wicketkeeper, was clearly on display in two defeats they had without Dhoni. CSK will play their next match against Delhi Capitals on 30th of April 2019. Delhi is having an amazing season whereas CSK would want some comprehensive wins under their belt before the playoffs.
The second-ranked Mumbai will play KKR away from home at Eden Gardens on 28th April 2019. Mumbai are peaking at the right time and would be playing KKR who are in a do-or-die situation as far as playoffs are concerned.
